Most people I talk to have tried Claude or ChatGPT, got something that read like a Wikipedia paragraph, and quietly decided AI was overrated.

But what if I told you that a free-tier Claude session can produce a working tool that lives on your day to day routine or operations within fifteen minutes, if you brief it the way you would brief a senior contractor on day one of a project?

Most people brief it the way they would chat to a stranger at a braai, which is what I refer to as "lazy prompting", and that is the very reason why they often don't get the output they want.

So I've decided to share the structure that flips it.

The four-corner brief

The role

Open by telling Claude what kind of operator you would hire for this job. "Act as a senior tax-ops specialist who has built reminder systems for ten-partner accounting practices in Cape Town." That single line narrows the output to specialist-grade. The next nine paragraphs you get back will be calibrated to that operator, instead of an averaged-out internet response.

The job

Say what you want built, in the exact format you want it in. The phrase that does the work here is "Build a single Artifact I can use today." That tells Claude to render something visible in the right-hand panel, a working web page, a calculator, a checklist, a PDF-ready document, instead of writing a hundred lines of prose explaining the concept.

The constraints

You need to give at least three or four lines of non-negotiables, for example:

  • The output must work offline.
  • The currency must be in Rands.
  • No use of external libraries allowed.
  • Dates must be structured in DD/MM/YYYY.

Your tone should sound like a business owner, not a consultant, where constraints are what keep production-ready output from drifting into theory-ware.

The context

Write out three or four lines of the messy real-world specifics only you know, descriptive of what is actually going on in your life, job or business. For example, an accounting firm could try:

  • We're a twelve-person practice in Sea Point.
  • Our typical clients are SMEs paying VAT, PAYE, and provisional tax.
  • Sign-off line at the bottom of every reminder which writes: "Reach out if SARS gives you grief, we'll handle it."

This is where your brief stops sounding like every other business owner's brief and starts sounding like your own, so you can finally stop getting unpolished and non-personalised outcomes from your AI tool.

A 15-minute experiment for tomorrow morning

  1. Pick one piece of admin in your business that you would happily delegate to a receptionist. It could be a quote template, a client onboarding checklist, a deadline reminder system, or a booking-confirmation email generator.
  2. Write four short paragraphs covering the four corners above and paste it into Claude.ai (free tier works fine for this).
  3. Watch the Artifact panel populate.

If the first version is close-but-wrong, say "tighten the third section" or "swap the colour palette to off-white background, near-black text, blue-pastel accent on buttons." Claude will then update the Artifact in place.

Each round refines the same artifact rather than rebuilding from scratch, and that is where the gratification lives, watching the thing change in front of you while you steer it.

The Claude.ai free tier gives you Claude Sonnet, Artifacts, web search, and roughly fifty messages a day on a long context. That is enough to brief a tool, iterate it five or six times, and download the working version before you hit a limit.

What free tier does not give you is API access, your own files saved into a Project across sessions, or code execution. For a business owner shipping a one-page tool that lives in their browser, those are limits that almost never bite the first time you try this.
